In the guest room they shared, Daniel cozied up to Rebecca as he relayed the events from earlier.

“What do you think happened?” Rebecca said.

Daniel sat up on the bed and leaned back against the wall, running his hands down his face. Before long, he turned to Rebecca. “I dunno. Wayne seemed concerned. More concerned than I think anyone else would be. Maybe he thinks there’ll be more to it? I asked him if it gets easier to make calls like this, and he said it never does.” Daniel managed a small smile. “It gives me a lot to look forward to, that’s for sure.”

“Maybe there is more to it,” Rebecca said. “Or maybe the idea of getting another law enforcement agency involved isn’t high on his fun list. I can tell the sheriff has a good heart, though. He cares about what’s at stake and knows how to work to solve the problem.”

“Maybe. I guess we’ll find out soon. By the way, you’re invited to be in the search party for the other kid. At six in the morning.” Daniel held her hand and looked at her.

“You mean we have to get up at six?” She leaned her head back with the flair of a stage actor and expressed her hyperbolic shock.

“No. We have to be there at six in the morning. So we leave around twenty minutes before that.”

“Well, it’s not like we can leave when we want to,” she lamented.

“Shit, I almost forgot about the wrestling match.”

“Yeah, but you found a new role model.” Rebecca smiled at him, and the low light of the lamp heightened the contrast of her hair and eyes to her sun-tinted skin.

“Oh, stop,” Daniel said blushing. “He probably didn’t take Hall to deliver the news because Hall would stare at the congressman’s wife the whole time.”

Rebecca leaned onto Daniel’s shoulder, “True, but it’s like he’s taking you under his wing. He might see potential in you.”

“Do you see the good in everyone, or are you biased because it’s me?”

“I do try to see the good in everyone, but sometimes it’s not easy to find. With you, it’s not like it’s hiding.” She reached up and ran her hand through his hair. “It’s a shame we have to wake up early, otherwise I could see your potential in me,” she said before she kissed him on the mouth.

“Yeah, I’m pretty tired myself. Even though we didn’t really do anything besides drink coffee and talk about the scene.”

“Physical exertion isn’t the only thing that leaves you tired. You’ve seen a lot of horrifying stuff in the last couple of weeks. Plus, the heat, and the car troubles. It all adds up.”

When they got into their bedclothes, Daniel decided to be the little spoon, and he grabbed Rebecca’s arm and draped it over his waist. She went to sleep before he did, and the soft snoring sounds pulled Daniel into slumber shortly after.
